While leading a nine-man Force Recon team, Capers and his Marines were ambushed by a much larger enemy force.
Despite sustaining multiple bullet wounds and 17 shrapnel injuries, Capers refused evacuation. He continued to coordinate air support, direct his Marines, and ensure every member of his team was safely extracted before allowing himself to board the rescue helicopter.
His actions represent the highest ideals of Marine Corps leadership.
Col. John W. Ripley: The Hero of Dong Ha Bridge
President Trump also awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously to Col. John W. Ripley for his incredible actions during the Easter Offensive on April 2, 1972.
Serving as senior Marine advisor to the 3rd Vietnamese Marine Battalion, Ripley faced an overwhelming North Vietnamese mechanized assault.
Under relentless enemy fire, Ripley climbed beneath the Dong Ha Bridge and single-handedly placed approximately 500 pounds of explosives over multiple trips. He then detonated the charges, destroying the bridge and halting the enemy advance.
His bravery saved countless lives and altered the course of the battle.
Today, Marines around the world continue to study and honor Ripley’s extraordinary actions.
