The USMC Spartan Shield Challenge Coin is inscribed with the letters on back, “Come home with this shield or on it.” This was what Spartan mothers purportedly told their sons before marching off to war. This gives you some insight to how deep their Warrior culture ran. The women, the children, and the old were all proficient Warfighters for their time. The Warrior culture of the US Marine Corps models itself on the ancient Spartans. No matter what your gender is, or what MOS you find yourself in, EVERY Marine is trained as a basic Rifleman!
